Well let’s see… the first episode was pretty interesting. A lot of characters were introduced. (And I didn’t find all of them too annoying, which is a good thing considering I pray for most of the female population of most shojo series to die… if it’s shojo there has to be a guy and a girl, not a guy and a bunch of girls all over him! That just spoils the whole atmosphere…)
The episode starts of with Tomoya (our main character) meeting Nagisa (yeah I know strange name…) on the way to school. There’s this whole cherry blossoms wind and hearts flying around feeling and of course that means that yeah, you’ve got your fated couple from the first minute of the show.(and it also means that any other girl that falls for him, which might be a lot, is doomed to a lifetime of loneliness and rejection…).
The next main(?) character that pops up is Youhei Sunohara, and he is a pathetic stuck up pushover. He gets beat up by some kind of football club in the beginning of the episode and later on by a girl. He kinda reminds me of Jun from Kanon who was always running behind Kaori. He’s probably a good guy but I can see him getting in a lot of pain in the episodes to come… poor guy…
Of course what kind of cool guy would Tomoya be if his whole class didn’t dislike him and he wasn’t late for class everyday? So naturally he gets lectured by the class’ rep (Ryou Fujibayashi) and threatened by her sister (Kyou Fujibayashi) if he bullies her… doesn’t Ryou look a lot like Misuzu from Air while playing with her cards? Ahhh it brings back all those sad (but good) memories… She looks cute but her sister is just too pushy…
On the way out for lunch Tomoya meets Nagisa again. She tells him that she has no friends since she is repeating her year because of an accident she had. All her friends had already graduated and she no longer knows anyone. Along the conversation Tomoya tries to make her waive her hand to some students on the roof top but when she does they turn around ignoring her…
That was actually my first clue on my early speculation that she’s actually a ghost. Before Tomoya went to the yard and met her, he passed by a couple of guys that were talking about a ghost of a girl, that was on a car accident, hunting the road. Furthermore, when they try to get Nagisa to join the theater club it was already closed down. That combined with the fact that no one except Tomoya notices her gave me the impression that something fishy was going on. And after Kanon and Air I don’t think Key animation would actually put a normal main character on their story.
But of course my amazing idea was demolished when later that day Tomoya walks by her family bakery shop. He meets her mother (that looks way too much like an older version of Misuzu… more nostalgic memories…) causes her to run out crying about her not good enough wicked bread, and gets bullied by Nagisa’s father (that unfortunately doesn’t look like Yukito at all! I’d really like to see how they’d look all grown up…). And since later on he is invited up to her house for dinner, and Nagisa is there of course, they are either a ghost family, or I was wrong. (and though I don’t like to admit the later, the first one seams too much… but once I get more info on this I’m sure I’ll come back to my first idea…)
Nagisa’s family is weird. They threaten Tomoya first, then assume he is Nagisa’s boyfriend, threaten him some more and then come up with a series of names to make him sound cooler, like Okazaki Ginga, Daiuchuu Ginga and then they add eternal to his name (Okazaki Tomoya Eternal… what a nice name…) and Nagisa’s father decides to call him Ethanol… really cool I know.
Poor Tomoya, he’ll have to spend the rest of his life with a crazy family (given he will eventually get together with Nagisa). They even have a hands up pose…
Well Tomoya’s family isn’t better. His mother apparently died on a car accident and his father is acting strange.. and Tomoya isn’t any better, running out from his home in the middle of the night. He was really lucky though and run into Nagisa, who offers to take him to the place of the city where dreams come true. And all the light and sparkles around her aren’t really normal so I’ll go back to my first impression. This girl is strange… I’ll just have to figure out why and how on the later episodes…
**Runs out to watch the second one**
So what do you think of this anime??? I would highly recommend it…
Until next time… (or episode…)
ja ne
Ps: I forgot to say that Tomoyo Sakagami, the girl that beats up Youhei and a couple of gangsters is really cool. Too bad she wont be getting the guy in the end….
